FAQ

What is Revision Hip Replacement Surgery?
Revision hip replacement surgery is a surgical procedure in which a worn out hip implant is replaced with a new implant. Hip implants often wear out slowly, but over time, they may wear out. In most cases an orthopedic surgeon can perform a revision. For most patients, revision surgery is very successful. The most common reason that a hip patient would need a revision is when they experience a condition called “loosening.” Aseptic loosening happens when the prosthetic hip joint becomes loose within the bone. When loosening occurs, it can become painful.

Other reasons why a patient may need a revision can include infection, the implant breaks or the bone around it becomes fractured. Depending on the medical complication, other treatments may be required. For example, if the tissue surrounding the implant becomes infected, the implant may need to be removed in order for the infection to be aggressively treated. Months later, the patient may need a revision hip replacement once the infection is gone and the tissue has healed.

Revision hip replacement surgeries tend to be more complicated then the initial hip implant and the surgical outcomes aren’t always as good. There can be increased problems, such as the quality of the remaining bone and whether there is difficulty securing the second hip implant into position.Careful planning is required by an orthopedic surgeon to make sure he or she can craft a new hip and use the right hip implant that will allow you to achieve a positive outcome from the surgery.

Further complicating a revision surgery is that the patients tend to be older and more medically fragile. Since the surgery is more difficult than the initial hip replacement surgery, the effects on the patients can be more serious. They often experience a longer surgery and more blood loss. If you feel you may need a revision surgery, discuss this possibility with your orthopedic surgeon. Not all problems with your hip implant may require a revision. Likewise, you may not be experiencing any symptoms but an x-ray could reveal that you need a second surgery.

It can be a difficult decision to make, especially when you’ve already been through surgery. Each patient should be considered on a case-by-case basis because each patient’s situation and physical condition can be very different. If you think you need a revision hip replacement, discuss this possibility with your orthopedic surgeon and find out if there are any other options to consider.
