FAQ

Hip pain can be among the most devastating health problems, making it difficult to engage in exercise, work or do normal household activities. This joint is a complex area of the body with muscles, tendons and nerves as well as the ball and socket joint; problems with any of them can result in pain.   Arthritis is one very common cause of pain in the hip joint itself. The most common type is osteoarthritis, in which the cartilage lining the joint wears down. This commonly occurs in older people and is caused when excessive strain is paced on the joint, such as if a person is overweight or has a history of sports injury. This alters the orientation of the joint, making tendons and ligaments stretch and making movement painful. Over time, the actual bones can be exposed and scrape together painfully.
In rheumatoid arthritis, the tissue is not destroyed or worn away, but inflamed.  This disorder affects the synovium, a thin membrane that covers the cartilage at the edge of each joint. It begins when the immune system starts to malfunction and attack the body’s tissues, not just foreign invaders as it is designed to do. When immune system cells attack the synovium throughout the body, the result is joints that feel painful, swollen and hot. Pain within the joint itself often appears at the front of the hips or near the groin.  Another inflammation-related type of pain is from bursitis, an inflammation of the fluid sacs that line the joint.  Pain from inflammation is often recognizable because the area will feel hot and swollen.
Tendinitis is inflammation of the tendons that connect muscles to bones, and is common in the hip area as well as other parts of the body.  They can become irritated and inflamed from strenuous exercise or overuse.  This type of pain may appear farther back than arthritis pain.
Hip pain can also be caused by a bone fracture, so anyone with brittle bones or who has been in a car accident should be aware of the danger and possibly get an x-ray.  It is important to see a doctor to get hip pain diagnosed, preferably as early as possible so doctors can catch the problem before it worsens. Treatment will depend on what is causing the pain. In the case of most hip pain, one treatment is ordinary over the counter pain medications and anti-inflammatories. There are drugs that can slow the progression of arthritis; if the pain and other symptoms are too bad, a more severe remedy is hip replacement surgery, in which the damaged or inflamed bone parts are replaced with metal, plastic or ceramic.   If the pain is caused by a muscle or tendon, healing can be sped up with heat, stretching, and exercises such as yoga to strengthen the muscles that keep the joint stable.
