FAQ

Can I Run After Hip Replacement?

Though hip replacement surgery is more common for older adults, people in the prime of their lives sometimes develop arthritis and other conditions that require hip replacement. Unfortunately, a hip replacement can create major changes in a person’s life. Some of these changes are good, but others limit physical activity. Luckily, it is possible to run and jog after a hip replacement. If you enjoy running before your operation and your doctor gives you the go-ahead after recovery, you will be able to continue to run for exercise, even with a hip replacement.

Running after a hip replacement can be safe and fun, but there are a few tips that can make the experience better. Most doctors recommend the following for hip replacement patients who enjoy running:

•    Ease back into your running routine after surgery. You will be engaged in physical therapy during your recovery process and running can be a part of this. Some doctors recommend walking with support poles and working your way back up to running in the weeks and months following surgery.

•    Focus on your stride while running. Twisting or overextending can cause your replacement joint to slip or pop out of place. If this happens, a doctor will need to put the joint back into place. This is not a serious problem, but it can be painful.

•    Do your best to keep inflammation from running to a minimum. Ice your hips and thighs after a run and pay attention to even mild pain. If anything seems unusual, bring it to your doctor’s attention. Obviously, even the healthiest runners experience some soreness after a long, intense run. It will take some time after hip replacement surgery to determine what is normal and what is problematic.

•    Incorporate other forms of exercise into your training. If running was your only form of fitness prior to surgery, this should change after surgery. Spend time on a stationary bike and incorporate stretching exercises such as yoga into your routine. This keeps your hips flexible and strengthens the muscles in the area. Swimming is also a gentle, effective exercise that helps you build your strength after surgery. You might find that cross-training enhances your running performance, making you a better runner after hip replacement surgery than before.

It is possible to enjoy running and a variety of other activities after hip replacement surgery, but it takes time. Ease your way back into your regular routine and you will be living pain-free in no time at all.
