FAQ

Delaying Total Hip Replacement Surgery
If you are suffering from hip pain and stiffness, and have tried several non-invasive treatments that don’t alleviate the pain and discomfort, your doctor will likely recommend that you undergo total hip replacement surgery. What if you don’t feel ready for such a serious medical procedure? No one can force you to undergo the surgery; the decision is yours alone. However, you should take the medical recommendation of your doctor or orthopedic surgeon seriously. There can be risks associated with delaying this surgery, such as increased deterioration of your hip joints, as well as increased chronic pain and stiffness.
Delaying surgery may also rule out less radical hip procedures that a surgeon could perform, such as hip resurfacing, because of the deterioration.

Depending on the condition of your joints, your doctor will likely first attempt non-invasive treatments to delay surgery. They may include pain medications, nutritional supplements, physical therapy or the use of walking aids, like a cane or walker. If you are contemplating hip replacement surgery, you’ll need to ask yourself if the severity of the pain justifies having the surgery. You are the only person who can answer this question.

While there may be health-related reasons why a surgeon may suggest holding off on having the surgery, if your hip condition is degenerative, it will only grow worse. The level of pain you are suffering now will only increase; postponing surgery also may pose its own set of risks. One of the biggest risks in delaying surgery is the continued degeneration of your hip joint, which will cause more pain and immobility. The bone-on-bone grinding action within your joint is not only painful, but it may cause the joint to become deformed.

If the deterioration of the joint is caught early enough, it is possible that a patient may be able to undergo a hip resurfacing, a less intensive surgery than total hip replacement. As the hip joint and surrounding tissue continues to deteriorate, it makes it less likely that hip resurfacing could be an option. When a joint becomes excruciatingly painful and stiff, many patients will become less active and eventually may be unable to carry out many of the normal activities they enjoyed. It is important that patients who have become sedentary because of chronic joint pain visit their doctor and discuss their situation. It can be easier for patients to have surgery when they are healthier, rather than waiting until their health has declined and their joints have gotten worse. It can help improve the outcome of surgery.
Most patients report that they wish they had undergone hip replacement surgery earlier.
