Can My Hip Replacement Result in Hip Dislocation?

Many people who undergo hip replacement surgery assume all of their pain and suffering is behind them. Unfortunately this is not always the case. Surgery can be a very effective method for easing the pain associated with hip arthritis, but some people find that what occurs in the aftermath of surgery is far worse. Could you suffer from dislocation after hip replacement surgery? Can surgery increase your likelihood of a dislocation? Read on to find out.

Hip replacement surgery replaces the hip joint. The process includes the removal of the damaged joint and the insertion of a brand new, artificial joint. These artificial joints can reduce the pain that is caused by the bone-on-bone contact of an arthritic hip, but it is not a cure-all that creates perfect hip joints.

Natural hip joints are supported by muscles, ligaments, and other bones in that area of the body. All help to keep the femoral head in the socket. Unfortunately, replacement hip joints are not as stable as natural hips. Some of the natural stabilizers are eliminated during the surgical process and the flexible, pliable nature of a natural hip joint is gone once you are using something made from metal and plastic. This makes it easier for hip replacements to dislocate.

What Can Be Done to Prevent Dislocation?

During your surgery consultation, your doctor should speak with you about what you can expect after the procedure. You will be given instructions for recovery, as well as a list of things to avoid. These include simple bodily movements, such as crossing your legs, bending your legs too much, sleeping on your sides, and sitting in low seating.

Some of these precautions are only temporary. In the weeks and months following surgery, the new replacement parts will gradually fuse with your natural bone, creating a stronger environment for the joint. However, some doctors encourage their patients to be very careful about how they move indefinitely following the procedure.

Treating a Dislocation

Should a dislocation occur, your hip joint will need to be repositioned. The process is performed under anesthesia. No surgery is required, unless there are multiple dislocations. Typically, the doctor pulls on the leg that is connected to the joint and the joint usually slides or pop back into place. Your doctor will likely want to take x-rays of the joint and the two of you will need to determine the cause of the dislocation to avoid future mishaps.
