FAQ

Medical Conditions That May Result in a Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement Surgery

If you’ve been told you may need a metal-on-metal hip replacement, you probably have one of the following medical conditions:

Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a form of hip arthritis, caused by the rubbing of bone against cartilage. As the cartilage wears thin, it fails to regenerate as quickly as it should, causing bone to rub against bone. Your body responds by making the area swell and ache, telling you something is wrong.  People who get osteoarthritis are usually genetically predisposed to this condition.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, which means instead of regenerating cartilage, your body’s immune system is attacking and tearing down the cartilage in the hip joint. If you have this sort of arthritis, you are probably feeling the effects in other joints as well as your hip joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is believed to be caused by infection or hormonal changes, but it also happens more often in people who have relatives who have had this form of arthritis, meaning genetics play a part in susceptibility.

Avascular Necrosis
Avascular necrosis is a problem where blood flow to part of the bone is obstructed. In the case of your hip pain, the blood is not flowing properly to the part of the thighbone that is resting inside the hip socket. The piece of bone that is not receiving enough blood flow begins to die and deteriorate, which makes the cartilage that attaches to it also deteriorate. This lack of blood flow also prevents additional repair or regeneration of cartilage, causing the bone to rub against bone or a very thin layer of weakened cartilage.

While this is often a genetic condition, this also can come about due to illness such as gout or Gaucher’s disease. Sometimes it can even happen after a person has had too many steroid injections. The dying bone and weakened cartilage no longer provides protection and cushioning like it used to, and the dying bone rubs directly against strong bone, causing the weaker bone to deteriorate further.

Dislocation of the Hip Joint
If you have ever dislocated your hip joint, you will be at increased risk of one day needing a hip replacement surgery. This is because the cartilage was most likely torn or bruised and may no longer regenerate the way it used to. In some cases, the bone continues to grind up against bone inside the socket, creating pain and swelling as the body unsuccessfully attempts to heal.

Do You Need a Hip Replacement?
If you have one of these conditions and cannot remedy the problem, you may end up getting a hip replacement. Be sure to discuss your options with your doctor, including what type of hip replacement implant you will get. Your options will most likely include a ceramic and metal, ceramic-only, polyethylene or metal-on-metal hip replacement implant.
