Do Hip Replacements Wear Out?

Over time, hip replacement devices wear out and become loose. In addition to general loosening, an implant can be affected by an infection, it can break, it can cause damage to the bone in the surrounding area, or it can just wear down from use. The loosening of a hip implant is fairly common, especially for patients who have had their implants in place for many years.

Loosening occurs slowly over time and makes it painful to perform normal movements. During the initial placement of the replacement, the device is fitted tightly into place, either using cement or the press-fitting method. Secured into the bone, the implant feels natural and causes very few limitations to a person’s ability to move and live normally. As the implant loosens, the entire area of the body moves out of alignment and pain continues to increase. Patients will notice a loss of motion and movements that were once comfortable become painful or impossible.

What Happens if My Hip Replacement Loosens?

Hip replacement loosening is a major concern for patients because the problem can create the need for revision surgery. This is the replacement of the initial device and it is a far more complicated procedure than the first placement of a hip implant. Many are not as successful as the first implant operation and patients often find their loss of movement is much greater with a second procedure.

Hip implants typically last about 20 years. There are instances in which patients experience problems with their implants much sooner. Though initial infections from the operation are usually curable, if you find your implant wearing away after five to ten years, you will likely need revision surgery. Other patients have better luck with their implants and find they are still performing well after as much as three decades.

What Can I Do to Avoid My Implant Wearing Out?

There is no way to determine exactly how long an implant will last and it can be difficult to choose the best implant option for each patient. You and your doctor will have a consultation prior to surgery, which will include a discussion about your age, your health, your lifestyle, and any other details that can affect the success of your implant. Make sure you know all you can about the implant you choose prior to the procedure and review care of the implant with your doctor after surgery. There are a few things patients can do to extend the life of their implant and avoid revision surgery for as long as possible.
