FAQ

Activities that Help You Heal Following Hip Replacement Surgery
After having hip replacement surgery, you may be expecting that you’ll be able to accomplish the same activities you did before, only without the hip pain. In some ways, you are right. Hip replacement surgery can give you your quality of life back, allowing you to participate in activities you were forced to give up because of the pain. But healing and recovery will take time. In order to have a successful outcome to your hip replacement, you’ll need to partner with your surgeon, medical staff and physical therapists to perform the exercises and work you’ll need to do to get your life back.

While you may be able to return to most activities you used to enjoy, you may need to make adjustments on how you do them. You will need to learn how to safely bend down, in order to make sure your new hip is safe and secure.  During the first few days in the hospital, your medical team will make sure you take it easy since you just underwent major surgery. However, you will need to start doing some activity, such as stretches and light exercises, not long after surgery to offset the effects of the anesthesia you received during surgery. It will allow you to better heal and keep blood clots from forming. A physical therapist will likely visit you soon after your surgery, possibly the next day, and teach you how to use your new hip. You’ll also be encouraged to get up and use your new hip soon after surgery. Even while still in bed, you may be asked to pedal your feet and get the blood circulating within your legs.

Most hip patients remain in the hospital about three to 10 days, or until they can perform specific tasks that they’ll need to do themselves at home, even with someone at home who will help. If patients can’t go home, they may have to spend some time at a nursing home.
Before you leave the hospital, your orthopedic surgeon will give you instructions on how to use walking aids, such as a walker or crutches. If you have an uncemented hip implant, you may not be able to put much weight on your new hip for two months. The femur bone needs time to heal and grow into the hip implant, which is made of a porous coating. If you have a cemented hip implant, you probably can put more weight on your leg right away, often by using a walker or a cane. You may need some type of walking support for four to six weeks to help your muscles heal.

If you wish to exercise, swimming is often recommended as soon as your hip wound is healed, about six or eight weeks after surgery. Otherwise, walking is one of the best exercises for hip replacement patients. Other activities that may be beneficial in helping you heal include golfing, biking and dancing. Avoid activities that can place stress on your new hip joint, such as contact sports, jogging, tennis or any activity where you must jump.
