FAQ

Suffering an Adverse Reaction to Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants
Most people who receive metal-on-metal hip implants during hip replacement surgery experience a positive outcome from the surgery, allowing them to live once again with increased mobility and without the pain caused by severe hip arthritis.
There are some patients, however, who experience an adverse reaction to the metal hip implants. It’s important if you have a metal implant, that you recognize the signs and symptoms and discuss them with your surgeon.

When you undergo hip replacement surgery, you’ll likely be asked to return for follow-up appointments every one or two years. If you have any new hip-related symptoms, or if the symptoms seem to be growing worse, discuss this with your surgeon. Symptoms may include pain, numbness, swelling, noises and a change in your ability to walk. These symptoms may be related to your artificial hip, your groin or legs. It may seem unrelated, but also discuss with your surgeon any changes in your personal health, or if you’ve been seeing another doctor for a new health condition since you had hip replacement surgery.

Adverse effects can occur with any hip implant, including metal-on-metal implants. These problems may include infection, loosening of the implant, bone loss or fracture, breakage of the implant or dislocation of the hip joint. Microscopic metal particles also can be shed from the metal-on-metal implants over time, causing a reaction surrounding the artificial joint. This reaction can lead to the deterioration of the tissues around the joint, loosening the metal implant and ultimately causing it to fail. Metal ions from the device can be released into the bloodstream.

Patients who’ve had difficulty related to their metal implants have experienced the following symptoms:•    Skin rashes, or a general hypersensitivity reaction
•    Cardiomyopathy
•    Neurological changes, including visual or auditory impairments
•    Psychological changes, which can include cognitive impairment and depression
•    Renal function impairment
•    Thyroid problems, including weight gain, feeling cold, extreme fatigue and neck discomfort

It is unknown how often these adverse reactions occur in patients who have metal hip implants. The degrees of symptoms vary widely between patients, which makes it difficult to track. If you are experiencing any adverse symptoms that could be related to your metal-on-metal hip implant, make an appointment with your surgeon to evaluate the performance of your implant. If you experience a new medical condition, even if it seems unrelated to your artificial hip, discuss your metal implant with your doctor, reminding him or her that you have the implant.
