How Can I Know if I Will React Poorly to a Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant?

One of the major downfalls of a metal-on-metal hip implant is the negative reaction a patient might have to the metal in the implant. Obviously, it is not natural to put metal into your body. For some, this addition of metal is not a big deal. It improves the strength of the hip joint and reduces the pain that comes with osteoarthritis in the joint. Others, though, find the implant creates more pain than they had prior to the implant procedure.

How can you know if a metal-on-metal implant will affect you in a negative way?

Unfortunately, there is no definitive way to know if your body will react poorly to the implant device. Some doctors administer a skin patch test or other type of allergy test, but this is rarely enough to know for sure if there will be a problem. If you have previously been diagnosed with sensitivity to any type metal, you can assume you will have a problem with the implant.

In addition to issues with metal sensitivity, there are other people who have a higher risk of suffering a bad reaction to a metal-on-metal implant. If you fall into any of the following categories, you should carefully consider your implant options before making a final decision and carefully monitor your response following the implant procedure:

•    Female
•    Kidney problems
•    Two hip implants
•    Suppressed immune system
•    Misalignment of implant device
•    Overweight
•    Very physically active

Unfortunately, it can take quite some time before a patient realizes there is a problem with an implant device. Metal reactions can occur quickly, especially if there is an allergy. However, there can also be a problem over time as metal fragments release into the body and build up in the system. By the time symptoms occur, there may already be a significant buildup, so changing the device will only do so much good.

How do you decide if a metal-on-metal implant is right for you? It varies. You and your doctor will need to discuss the risks and weigh the pros and cons. For someone who is suffering from a great deal of pain, it might be worth the risk. If you are someone who has just recently begun experiencing symptoms from arthritis and you have not tried other methods of relieving the pain, you may want to postpone implant surgery for a few years.
