Will Hip Replacement Hurt?

In general, hip replacement surgery hurts no more than other surgical procedure. Patients undergo anesthesia during surgery and must participate in physical therapy once the procedure is completed. Most patients report average, bearable pain and discomfort in the days and weeks following surgery, but as long as all goes as planned, the pain is rarely severe. If you experience severe pain following hip surgery, it may be an indication something is wrong and you should contact your doctor immediately.

The Days after Your Surgery

Your recovery process begins in the hospital. Most patients spend an average of three to five days in the hospital after their surgery, beginning physical therapy within a few hours of the procedure. You may be asked to leave your bed the first day after surgery and should expect to be walking with the assistance of a walker or crutches within days.

The physical therapy process continues after you are released from the hospital. Some patients work with a therapist in the home, while others visit a therapy center several times per week. Physical therapy will continue for weeks or months after the procedure, depending on how quickly you progress and heal. Some patients find physical therapy a minor annoyance, but mostly because of the traveling and daily commitment. As long as you are adjusting to the implant without problems, physical therapy will produce only mild discomfort, not extreme pain.

There are a few things your doctor will advise you avoid in the weeks following your surgery. These include excessive use of steps, bending your hips or knees in a deep angle, rotating your feet and toes outward, and of course, avoiding situations that could result in a fall. Your doctor will provide a time schedule allowing you to return to normal activities after your procedure.

Other Risks

In addition to mild pain and discomfort during recovery, there are some risks associated with hip replacement surgery. Some patients experience a lengthening of the affected leg during surgery and find their legs are uneven even after the healing process is over. Patients with hip implants are encouraged to avoid crossing their legs or sitting in low seating. Nerves can also be damaged because of swelling associated with the arthritis, surgery, or implant.

Finally, it is possible for an implant to become loose or break. Some patients also develop an infection following surgery. If you experience any unusual symptoms following surgery or there are problems at any time in the life of your implant, contact your doctor immediately.
