Is a Ceramic Hip Implant Right for You?

There is a lot of talk about hip implant options, especially those made from metal. Unfortunately, many of the metal models are under recall because they are harming users. Luckily, metal implants are not the only option. If you must undergo hip replacement surgery, it is important to understand the various types of implant devices and determine which is right for you. For many, the right type of implant will be one made from ceramic.

Benefits of Ceramic Implants

Ceramic hip implants feature a number of positive qualities. They are a relatively new development and they are considered the longest lasting option among implants. They experience little wear and tear while in use and create a smooth joint that is comfortable and feels natural. Most research has shown there is less risk for loosening of the implant because the ceramic device wears so well. This reduces the need for revision surgery, which can be complicated and leave a patient with reduced mobility. Many doctors are recommending ceramic hip implants for patients in their 40s and 50s.

Concerns

Unfortunately, there is a downside to ceramic implants. Since they are new, there is only a small amount of long-term data concerning the performance of these implants. They have functioned well in lab studies, but we have yet to see how well they consistently perform in patients after several decades of use.

There have also been instances of catastrophic failure with ceramic implants. Catastrophic failure occurs when the implant shatters inside of the body. Ceramic is a hard, brittle material, so it is possible for it to crack. Imagine a ceramic cup or plate dropping to the floor in your kitchen. The material shatters into several shards, obviously something that is not ideal if it occurs within a person’s body. Newer models of ceramic hip implants are proving to be more durable, so this is becoming less and less of a problem.

At this point, ceramic implants are viewed as a fairly sound option for hip replacement. They are constantly improving and will hopefully someday be shatter-proof. They have a long lifespan, which is one of the major concerns for all hip implants. Finally, they are free of metal, which is considered to be, at the moment, the greatest danger for patients undergoing hip replacement surgery. If you are in need of a hip replacement and you think a ceramic device might be the right option for you, speak with your doctor about your specific options.
