Is Your Hip Replacement Squeaking?

A number of complications can arise when a person has a hip replacement, but one of the most troubling is the squeaking of the device. Hearing a squeak or other type of noise coming from within your body is unnerving. What causes hip squeaking? Is it dangerous and can it be stopped? Read on to find out.

Reasons for Squeaking

There are a number of different reasons a hip replacement device may squeak. Usually there is an issue with the implant that causes the noise. Metal and plastic implants rarely squeak, but the noise does seem to be a problem with ceramic implants. The most common reason relates to the size of the implant.

The position of the implant can also cause squeaking. Your surgeon will do everything possible to properly align the implant during surgery, but some studies have shown that certain alignments create a squeaking sound. Unfortunately, it may not be noticeable until after the surgery is complete.

Finally, it may be your body creating the squeak. Overweight or tall patients, as well as younger patients, tend to experience squeaking more than others. Anyone who must perform wider ranges of motion is at risk for squeaking.

Are You in Danger if You Squeak?

In most cases, squeaking is not a serious problem and poses no danger. Most patients find the squeaking annoying or they are embarrassed by it. Your doctor might be able to offer tips on how to avoid the squeaks, but if the noise is only an inconvenience, there is little to be done to eliminate it completely.

It is important to let your doctor know if you are hearing a squeak, even if it is not a problem. In some cases, squeaking is an early indicator there is a problem with the implant. This is especially true with ceramic implants, which have been known to shatter.

If your doctor determines the squeaking is a sign of a more serious problem, revision surgery may be needed to fix the positioning of the implant or the implant itself. Revision surgery is riskier than the initial placement surgery, so most doctors prefer to avoid it. However, if an implant can be fixed before catastrophic failure, it is worth the potential risk of revision surgery.

As with any change in your body, you will need to adjust to your new implant. Unfortunately, this adjustment might include a few minor annoyances, such as squeaking. As long as your implant is strong and your body is healthy, you have nothing to worry about and you will eventually learn to live with your new device.
