Frequently Asked Questions:

Most hip replacements are relatively simple: the surgeon removes the femoral head and socket from your hip, and replaces each with a metal piece. In an attempt to achieve a more natural range of motion, as well as longer lasting hip replacement, industry professionals have been working to create more complex implants. These systems have several additional components, designed to increase stability in the hip and minimize the amount of pressure that the patient puts on the joint. These systems were also lauded because they could be adapted more easily to the individual joint requirements of the patient.

Metal-on-metal implants have been under scrutiny for years for the side effects that can result, most notably the frequent need for a second surgery or hip replacement, and because some systems do possess a metal-on-metal juncture, they’re prone to the same types of side effects- even if patients weren’t warned.  Metallosis, hip implant failure, metal poisoning, and severe pain have occurred in some instances.

A second hip replacement or revision surgery might not sound particularly traumatic, but it can be extremely difficult on the patient in this instance. First, the way that these two implants rest within the body requires a particularly invasive surgery. The stem portions of these hip implants are lodged within the patient's femur for stability, so surgery to dig that stem out of your body can be very painful and traumatizing. In addition, it can be tough to pay the copay or out of pocket expenses, whether you have insurance or not. While it’s good for the medical industry to perform two surgeries on you, it certainly doesn’t help your budget, and isn’t in the best interests of the patient.
