FAQ

Signs of a Failed Hip Implant
While most hip replacement surgeries are successful, there are many hip patients who are facing a revision surgery, or a second surgery to remove the failing implant and replace it with a new one.  Hip replacement systems also have been recalled for defects, requiring patients to once again endure the surgery and take time off from work for several weeks for yet another recovery. Some patients may not realize their hip implant has been recalled, or if they may be experiencing a failure of the device.

Here are some of the most common symptoms associated with the failure of a hip implant:
1.    You begin to experience pain once again in your artificial hip joint. The pain can vary, but can be felt in the groin or even in the lower back.
2.    You begin to experience pain on your leg or hip that hasn’t been operated on. When a patient has a bad hip, he or she often compensates by putting more weight on the opposite side, which can become painful.
3.    You start to feel pain during weight-bearing activities.
4.    You begin to develop a limp and you may not even realize it. As your hip begins to degenerate, the limp will become more pronounced.
5.    Your intuition is telling you something is not right with your hip, especially when you start to walk or stand up.
6.    Your range of motion and flexibility seems to be decreasing, and your hip is starting to stiffen up.
7.    You’re feeling run down or tired, a possible sign that your body is trying to compensate for your failing implant.
8.    Your artificial hip has started to make noises when you move, such as creaking or squeaking sounds.
9.    You’re noticing swelling around your hip implant.
10.    You may be suffering from no symptoms at all. An X-ray or other exam may be necessary for your orthopedic surgeon to detect a hip implant failure.

If you feel your hip implant may be failing, or if you’ve discovered that the type of hip replacement system you have has been recalled, make an appointment with your orthopedic surgeon to discuss your concerns. You will likely undergo a physical exam, imaging tests and a visit with your surgeon. Hip replacement patients should see their surgeons for follow-up visits every one to two years if there are no symptoms, and sooner if there is any discomfort or pain.
