Frequently Asked Questions:

Is the industry moving away from metal on metal devices?

Metal-on-metal implants have been a common course of treatment for many years, because they were considered the most durable option. As more patients suffer serious side effects after receiving a metal-on-metal implant, however, the medical industry might finally begin to shift away from the practice. With ceramic implants and complex plastic options, the hip replacement community no longer needs to rely on potentially poisonous metal implants. Metal-on-metal hip replacements currently compose a third of the roughly 250,000 hip replacement surgeries that take place every year, but other alternatives could easily replace that portion of the market.

Hopefully, this is just what the medical industry needs in order to move away from metal-on-metal implants. Studies done in the UK completed in recent years have begun to conclusively show that metal-on-metal implants require more revision surgeries than any other type of implant, and that side effects like metallosis are definitely side effects that can damage both the hip implant and body. Conclusive data coupled with so many metal-on-metal recalls (other hip implant companies have been forced to recall some metal-on-metal implants as well) should prove that continuing to implant metal-on-metal devices will only continue to cause further pain in hip replacement patients. As early as 2010, leading surgeons across the United States started refusing to use metal-on-metal implants with their patients in order to prevent revision surgery a couple of years down the road. The debris from a metal-on-metal implant has obvious, immediate ramifications, such as inflammation and pain, but doctors also worry that there are long term consequences from metal buildup that haven’t yet been identified.
