FAQ

How Doctors Use Soft Tissue Imaging for Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacements
Doctors will frequently use soft tissue imaging for metal-on-metal hip replacements to see how the joint is functioning. As you read this article, remember that not all doctors will use the same type of imaging to accomplish the same end result. We will begin by looking at the different types of soft tissue imaging that can be used in metal-on-metal hip replacements.

Types of Soft Tissue Imaging
There are three different methods of imaging for metal-on-metal hip replacements that are used in the medical world: Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Computed Tomography Scan, and Ultrasounds.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Magnetic Resonance Imaging, commonly known as an MRI, offers the best visualization of the tissue around the metal-on-metal replacement. However, since these types of replacements are made of metal, it is unsafe for the metal to be in an MRI machine.

Computed Tomography Scan
A Computed Tomography Scan, commonly called a CAT scan, shows the exact positioning of the implant and also the condition of the bony tissue in the area surrounding the metal-on-metal hip replacement. CAT scans can unfortunately be distorted by artifacts that are not connected to the implant, such as metal shavings or plastic parts of an implant.

Ultrasound
An ultrasound can show very detailed soft tissue visualization, but will not show the metal artifacts in the replacement. Although the image can be very detailed, it relies heavily on the skill of the operator of the machine and is also limited by depth. The further from the joint the ultrasound is, the harder it is to get a clear picture.

Which is the Best Type of Soft Tissue Imaging?
Doctors tend to use a combination of these scans to get the best overall picture of the metal-on-metal hip replacement they can get. The end result is to see if the patient has elevated metal ion levels. These metal ions can come from the metal shaving off into the bloodstream or muscle, commonly found as cobalt or chromium.

Soft tissue imaging is a quick way to show if there are any metal fragments that can be easily seen, as this is the first step to testing a patient for elevated metal ion levels.  Metal-on-metal hip replacements are easily seen using several of the above imaging methods, thus helping the doctor get an overall picture of the replacement without having to perform surgery.

When Should Your Doctor use Soft Tissue Imaging
Patients with metal-on-metal hip replacements should typically get a check-up by their doctor every one to two years if they have experienced no pain. Any pain experienced after three months following the surgery is a red flag. Patients experiencing long term post-surgery pain should immediately talk to their doctor about a soft issue imaging exam.
