What Does Hip Implant Surgery Involve?

The process of hip replacement surgery can be a scary prospect, especially if you have no idea what to expect. Though everyone’s experience is slightly different, it can help to have some idea what the procedure entails. If you have specific questions about your surgery, speak with your doctor and bring up any concerns in advance. If you want a general idea of how your surgery will go, read on.

You will be given specific instructions to prepare for surgery. There will be certain things you cannot drink or eat prior to surgery. It is also important you get a quality night of sleep, so your body is well-rested for the procedure. You will be asleep for certain parts of the surgery, but it will still be a long, stressful day.

At the Hospital

Preparation at the hospital is primarily handled by the nurses and other hospital staff. You will be given anesthesia and likely remember very little of the surgical procedure. You will begin mild physical therapy shortly after awakening from surgery. Your doctor wants to get you moving as quickly as possible to avoid complications such as blood clots. Compression socks will likely be worn during your stay in the hospital to further reduce your risk for clots.

Your first order of business is to move to a seated position. You will have the assistance of a nurse or physical therapist for this. He or she will also assist you with leg and hip exercises performed in your bed. Between movement sessions, you will be encouraged to eat and rest.

Therapy

Within a day or two of your surgery, you will meet with a physical therapist and occupational therapist. The physical therapist works with you on rehabilitating your body and becoming comfortable with your new implant. The goal is to get you mobile and walking, and to increase your strength. The occupational therapist helps you accomplish tasks such as dressing and bathing. You must be able to take care of these things before you are released to go home.

Physical therapy will continue once you have been released from the hospital. It will either be done in your home or you will need to be transported to a physical therapy center or back to the hospital several times each week. These sessions can be strenuous, but they are intended to help you regain as much mobility as possible and heal as quickly as you can. In addition to physical therapy sessions, you will also need to make follow-up visits to your surgeon to ensure you are healing properly and all is going well with your implant.
