Frequently Asked Questions:

What types of things can impact my recovery after hip surgery?

One of the problems that can impact the mobility of a hip replacement patient is the amount of muscle and bone removed during the procedure. No matter how great the substitute, your range of motion can be limited if your surgeon removes too much muscle or bone. In many traditional hip replacement surgeries, the surgeon has no option- he or she is required to remove extra bone and tissue to properly implant the device. When that happens, it can severely impact your recovery in several ways. It can simply prolong the time that it takes you to recover from surgery, or it can impact your mobility in the long term. Luckily, that may no longer be the case.

Some surgeons are working to perfect a surgical approach that saves as much healthy bone and tissue as possible. Surgeons make a three or four inch incision on the side of the hip that is getting replaced, in order to minimize the amount of muscle that needs to be moved or disrupted in order to perform the surgery. In a typical surgery, muscle may be excised just so that the surgeon can access the hip area to implant the device.
