FAQ

What is Hip Resurfacing Surgery?

There are numerous individuals who suffer from hip pain. Pain in your hip joint can be such a burden on our daily lives. If you are having pain even doing simple tasks like getting dressed, going down steps, exercise, drive the car or enjoy every day activities, you likely have a need for surgery to remedy the pain.

When to Consider Surgery

If you pain just will not go away with at home treatments, you might consider seeking the help of an orthopedic surgeon. The way the hip joint works is that is consists of two bones: the ball of the joint and the socket. The socket is at the end of your femur (the large bone in your thigh). It fits into the socket which is located in the pelvis.

When your hip joint has inflammation for a long period of time or becomes injured, this can cause damage to your joint. Long term inflammation can wear down the protective cartilage in your joint. This is the part of the joint that allows your bones to move freely.

When there is no more cartilage, your bones rub together and cause you a lot of pain. There is nearly nothing that will help this problem other than surgery at that point. You can either live in pain or seek the help of an orthopedic surgeon who can assess the situation.

Hip Resurfacing Surgery Basics

Both a total hip replacement and hip resurfacing surgery are a type of hip replacement. With a total hip replacement, the entire femoral head (ball) and the socket are replaced with a synthetic material.

However, with a hip resurfacing surgery, there is more of the bone preserved. In this procedure, the surface of the ball on the joint is removed. This leaves a lot of the bone still in tact. It is then covered with a metal cap or surface over the existing ball joint.

This type of resurfacing also uses metal to be put in place of the damaged hip socket surface. After the surgery, the bones move together much more freely and the patient will likely be in a lot less pain.

If you are experiencing a lot of pain that will not subside in your hip joint, discuss all your options with your doctor. They will be able to recommend all types of treatment and discuss which one is the perfect solution for you.
