What Maintenance is Required for My Hip Replacement?

The days and weeks following your hip replacement surgery are some of the most important in terms of determining the success of your replacement. If you are able to adjust to life with a replacement device and avoid infections or complications during this time, chances are your hip implant will be a positive change in your life. What should you know to help you recovery from the implant procedure and adjust to your new joint?

Medication May be Necessary

Most patients are given a variety of prescriptions following their implant procedure. The most important are pain medication and antibiotics. Pain medication eases the pain associated with surgery and the pain of your healing hip. Antibiotics reduce the likelihood of any kind of infection from the surgery. NSAIDS, which help to reduce swelling, pain, and fever, may also be prescribed. Depending on your personal health and circumstances, your doctor might also suggest a stool softener, blood thinners, or vitamins.

If you are concerned about any of the prescriptions given by your doctor, ask about his or her rational for suggesting the medication. If you believe there is a problem, address your concerns with him or her. Never take more than the recommended dosage of a medication and do not decide on your own after surgery that you do not need a medication.

Physical Therapy Enhances the Healing Process

Most patients need physical therapy in the days and weeks following their hip implant procedure. The exercises in physical therapy may be slightly uncomfortable, but they are intended to improve your range of motion, decrease the pain of healing, and help you learn about your new joint. Physical therapy also increases your strength and reduces your risk for future injury.

Most patients spend several weeks walking with the assistance of an external device. As healing occurs, patients typically progress from a walker to crutches or a cane. Though your goal is to walk without assistance, do not rush your progress and put yourself at risk for injury.

You will also be instructed to wear pressure stockings, keep your knees apart, especially when sleeping, and avoid certain positions that bend your knees or hips too drastically. It is important you follow your doctor’s instructions concerning these things because they are intended to prevent dislocation. Something might feel comfortable momentarily, but if you extend your joint too far or put too much pressure on it, there is a chance it will pop out of place and need to be reset.
