Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Autografting Tissue Surgery?

Not all hip pain is caused by arthritis. Arthritis driven hip pain is almost always approached the same way- lifestyle changes and pain medicine regimens to try to stave off surgery. When dealing with other types of hip injuries, doctors often operate the same way. Once all nonsurgical options are exhausted, doctors try to choose the least invasive surgical option, to save the body from the stress and trauma of invasive surgery. Minimally invasive surgical techniques are becoming more and more popular, and the development of new surgical tools and techniques allows doctors to utilize minimally invasive techniques in new surgical specialties.

Femororacetabular impingement (commonly referred to as FAI) is a condition that often affects athletes who place particular stress on their joints. In these patients, the bones that compose the hip joint and pelvis region do not fit together properly, which can cause intense pain. The condition isn't painful in every patient, because the bones may not cause enough friction to make a noticeable impact in the patient's mobility. Unlike conditions like osteoarthritis, FAI can and does occur in patients of all ages, even teenagers who are physically active. In patients who are particularly active- especially in athletic patients- the increased wear and tear on the hip joints can exacerbate the FAI and cause pain. Continuing to exercise and remain active while suffering from FAI can make the damage to your joints so extensive that lasting joint damage can occur. Untreated FAI can actually cause osteoarthritis down the line, so treating FAI can help you avoid a hip replacement in later years of your life.

Researchers are experimenting with different surgical techniques to solve this problem, each of them on the cutting edge of orthopedic surgery. In one such surgery, surgeons removed autograft tissue from the iliotibial band of the patient, using this tissue to solve the problem. This research was conducted on 26 athletes performing in high impact sports, such as soccer, football, baseball, and hockey. At the end of this experiment, 23 of these athletes were able to successfully resume participation in their sports, and they reported satisfactory mobility and pain reduction. Surgeries like this one are particularly innovative because they utilize extraneous tissue within the patient’s own body to solve the problem. This reduces the risk of rejection (a distinct possibility when using transplant or cadaver tissue) and unnatural wear and tear (when using an artificial replacement).
