FAQ

Is There Any Way to Predict if I Will Have Complications With My Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement Surgery?

Are you worried that you may encounter complications with your metal-on-metal hip replacement surgery? If you’re nervous about the surgery, be sure to look into the following factors.

Anesthesia
Have you been put under before? Did your body tolerate the anesthesia well? Make sure to discuss any concerns about going under with your doctor.

Blood Loss/Clotting Issues
Make sure you talk to your doctor about blood thinners and/or blood clot risks. Your doctor will tell you about mild exercises you can do immediately after the surgery to keep your blood moving (ankle pumps, ankle rotations, buttock clenches, knee raises) and will make sure you are not at risk for clots or hemorrhaging. If you are concerned, you can donate blood ahead of time and have it stored so you will have a supply of your own blood on hand in case anything goes awry during the surgery.

Metal Sensitivity
If you’ve ever shown any sort of sensitivity to metal in the past, you’ll want to discuss whether a metal-on-metal hip replacement is right for you or not. You may want to look into other options such as ceramic-on-ceramic, polyethylene-on-polyethylene (plastic) or some other hybrid implant. Metal sensitivity can cause a range of problems for those who have metal-on-metal hip replacement implants, including the following:
•    Kidney problems
•    Tissue reactions
•    Skin rashes
•    Emotional disorders
•    Visual impairment
•    Audio impairment

Many people don’t have problems with metals implants at all, but those who have severe reactions to the metal ions released by these metal-on-metal hip replacement implants should use a different type of prosthesis.

Dislocation
All artificial hips bring with them the risk of dislocation. It’s much easier for a metal-on-metal ball and socket to slide apart than it is for a natural hip. Ceramic hip balls and sockets and polyethylene hip balls and sockets are also quite susceptible to slipping apart. You will need to learn what your new limitations are so you won’t bend too far or bring your knee up too high, leading to a dislocation.

Will You Have Complications With Your Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement?
There’s no way to predict for certain if you will encounter problems with your surgery, but you can take precautions. Make sure you’ve had a thorough discussion with your doctor about implant options, asking why your surgeon is recommending the type of implant he or she is recommending. Talk through issues that surround surgery in general as well as issues specific to your hip replacement. Be sure to set up adequate home health care support for your return home. If you take precautions, you will more likely to have a successful surgery experience.
