FAQ

What are hip implants?
At some point in your life, you or a loved one may need to have a medical implant, such as a hip implant. People who suffer from arthritis, a hip disease, or may have injured their hip in some way, may need a hip implant.  Hip implants can relieve daily hip pain and also improve a person’s quality of life, allowing them to return to activities they may have had to give up because of pain.

During hip replacement surgery, the patient’s femoral head, or “ball,” and acetabulum, or “socket,” are removed and replaced with a prosthetic ball, usually made of ceramic or metal, and a cup-like prosthetic. The artificial socket can be made of one or two materials, usually metal, plastic or ceramic. The ball head is attached to the taper of the metal stem, which is implanted within the femur bone to give it strength and durability.

There are five different forms of hip implants available in the United States, and each carries its own benefits and risks. They include:

•    Metal-on-metal: Both the ball and socket of these hip implants are composed of metal.
•    Ceramic-on-Ceramic: This ball joint is composed of ceramic, with a ceramic-lined socket.
•    Metal-on-polyethylene: The ball joint is usually made of metal, while the hip socket is composed of polyethylene, a form of plastic, or it features a polyethylene lining.
•    Ceramic-on-polyethylene: This features a ceramic ball and a ceramic-lined socket.
•    Ceramic-on-metal: This implant features a ball joint of ceramic with a metal-lined socket.

An orthopedic surgeon typically performs hip replacement surgery and will offer recommendations on what type of hip implant will best suit a patient. There are many factors to consider when deciding which implant would work best for a patient. Those factors include a patient’s weight, age, height, activity level and the source of the chronic hip pain.
It’s important to note that hip implants might need to be replaced in the future. Each patient and hip implant system used are different, and this means there will be different outcomes for everyone who undergoes the surgical procedure.

How long the hip implant system will function varies between patients. The factors that determine the longevity of the hip implant may include how the surgery went, the type of hip implant used, as well as the patient’s age, gender, weight, activity level and the medical condition that attributed to the need for hip replacement surgery.
