Frequently Asked Questions:

It sounds pretty unlikely, but a new study has shown that cataract surgery in seniors can reduce the need for hip replacements by decreasing the number of hip fractures 23%. Not only are falls costly, they often result in hip fractures in the senior population. One of the biggest risk factors for hip replacement or revision surgery is a hip fracture. Seniors living with impaired vision are far more likely than other seniors to suffer from a fall that can result in a hip fracture. In particular, this new study has shown that cataracts are a particular risk factor. Cataracts refer to a condition in which the eye's lens has become cloudy. This condition results in blurry vision, and becomes more common as you age, especially if you’re living with severe diabetes or other medical conditions. More than 50% of American residents develop cataracts by the time they reach 80 years old. To correct this, surgeons perform cataract surgery, removing the blurry lens from within the eye and replacing it with a clear artificial lens.

This study compared two populations: seniors living with cataracts who had and had not received cataract surgery. A third of the group in question received cataracts during the course of this study, and the study cannot conclusively prove cause and effect. What the study did conclude, however, is that in the year after receiving cataract surgery the risk of a hip fracture was reduced by 16%. That number jumped to 23% when the patient who received cataract surgery was suffering from a severe cataract problem. More than 50% of hip fractures result in hip surgery. Most commonly, that is either a single or total hip replacement procedure, because it is difficult to access and revise a femoral head or socket fracture in any other way. This study can illustrate the fact that preventative care and managing certain risk factors can greatly influence the risk that you’ll need to undergo major surgery. If your daily life includes struggling with a vision problem, rectifying that issue could result in a life changing lateration in your mobility. The process will simply allow you to complete daily tasks without the constant frustration of blurry eyesight, and your once safe home will return to a secure place to spend your time. Cataract surgery is so short and safe that the decision is an easy one to make for medically eligible candidates.
