Am I Too Old for Hip Replacement?

This is a question orthopedic doctors hear on a fairly frequent basis, but it is still one that is difficult to answer. Whether or not a patient is too old for a hip replacement is based on a variety of things. First, the doctor must determine if the patient’s claims of being too old are actually another way of saying he or she is frightened of undergoing the operation. As long as the concerns are not raised out of fear, there are a number of other things a doctor will consider when determining if hip replacement surgery is the best option for a patient.

The patient’s current health plays a major role in whether or not hip replacement is the right choice. There are several reasons for this. First, a patient in poor health will have a very difficult time during recovery. His or her body is already taxed and it might be too much to expect it to heal from major surgery. This is assuming his or her health is even good enough to make it through the surgery procedure.

Health is also a factor because of mobility. If a patient is so unhealthy he or she is unable to move, there is less reason to undergo the operation. If it is possible to keep an immobile patient comfortable with medication and physical therapy, an operation is not worth the risk.

Of course, the question of whether someone is too old for hip replacement must include a patient’s chronological age. The challenge is determining how important that number is for a particular individual. There are plenty of 85 year old patients leading active lives who could benefit from replacement surgery. There are also people 15 years younger who are experiencing a number of health challenges and their ailing hip is the least of their worries.

Perhaps a better consideration beyond the actual number of age is a person’s lifestyle. If someone is active, he or she is more likely to benefit from the temporary setback of surgery. Not only will the recovery period be faster, a hip replacement will lead to a better quality of life. If a person is sedentary and other methods of treating hip pain are having a positive effect, it could be better to postpone surgery.

Much of the decision depends on what the future holds. If a doctor believes surgery is inevitable at some point in a person’s life, it will be necessary to determine the best time to perform the surgery. Too soon could mean a revision surgery is needed down the road, but waiting too long could result in a tough recovery period that triggers a number of other health challenges.
