How to Prepare For Your Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement Surgery

If you’re going in for a metal-on-metal replacement surgery, you will want to make sure you’ve prepared properly before the big event takes place. While hip replacement surgery is now considered common and most hip replacement surgeries are successful, it’s still a big deal. You will want to consider many aspects of your life as you prepare.

Medical Issues
Be sure to cover all concerns in your pre-operation medical exam. Talk about medications you currently take and any health concerns such as heart trouble or breathing issues. Be sure to mention any allergies you’ve had, past or present, and any concerns regarding asthma or anesthesia.

If you are getting a metal-on-metal hip replacement implant, you will also want to discuss the possible effects of metal ions in your body. Some people experience side effects from the presence of metal inside their bodies. If you’ve already had a metal implant and have experienced negative side effects, you may wish to discuss alternatives such as a ceramic implant.

Home Issues
You may be in the hospital for anywhere between two days to a week, depending on how the surgery goes and how strong you are. When you go home, you will need help around the house for a while. You will need to use a walker for anywhere from three to four weeks after your surgery, and will not be ready to drive a car until somewhere between one and two months after your surgery. You will probably need to take six weeks (or more) off work (if you still work.)

Be sure to get help with:
•    Pet care
•    Grocery shopping
•    Laundry
•    Meal preparation
•    Home maintenance
•    Medication (filling prescriptions)

If you don’t have a spouse, partner, adult child or friend who is willing to check in on you and help you, you will need to talk to your doctor about home health care. Find out what kind of home health care is available through your health insurance plan. If you do not have enough support, discuss options including sliding scale fees and alternative plans.

Insurance Issues
Before you go in for your surgery, be sure to check into insurance issues. Find out what will be covered and what won’t be covered. Set up automatic payments or assign all medical bill management to a trusted friend or relative so you won’t have to think about payment during the time of the surgery. Make sure you’ve gotten all required referrals and seen the appropriate specialists so your surgery will be covered by your insurance policy. Some insurance plans will require that you prove you tried to deal with the hip pain issue with other methods before jumping to surgery, so make sure you’ve followed all the suggestions and checked in with the proper doctors.

Preparing for Your Hip Replacement
Be sure to make sure you have alerted everyone on your emergency contact list and let people know what you may need after your surgery. Pack extra clothes and toiletries for your stay at the hospital. Once you’re properly prepared, you can relax and let the doctors do their jobs. Soon you’ll be on your way to less pain and more mobility!
