What Not to Do Following Hip Replacement Surgery
While most hip implants are strong and durable, it’s important to remain cautious as your hip heals. Your muscles and bones also need to heal and grow stronger following surgery, so you’ll need to follow your orthopedic surgeon’s recommendations on how to prevent dislocating your new hip joint and to make sure it heals properly. Here are many of the frequent precautions given to hip replacement patients during their recovery:

The “Don’ts” of Hip Replacement
•    Don’t raise your knee higher than your new hip.
•    Don’t try crossing your legs until at least eight weeks following surgery.
•    Don’t lean forward while seated or as you’re about to sit down.
•    Don’t reach to the ground when seated in a chair.
•    Don’t turn your toes in or out too much when bending over.
•    Don’t reach to pull blankets up when lying down in bed.
•    Don’t bend beyond a 90 degree angle.
•    Don’t stand with your feet pointed inward.
•    Don’t kneel with pressure solely on your unoperated leg.
•    Don’t decide you can or can’t do something because of pain.

The “Dos” of Hip Replacement
Do keep your affected leg facing ahead of you.
Do try to keep your affected leg ahead of you when you are standing or sitting.
Do sit on a high stool in your kitchen or dining room.
Do use your knee on your operated leg to kneel on.
Do make sure you take advantage of the healing properties of ice in reducing the swelling and pain in your new hip, but don’t apply the ice directly onto your skin.
Do apply a heating pad to your hip before you exercise. A heating pad may be your best bet, but a damp, warm towel also can be applied for about 15-20 minutes beforehand.
Do try to curb some of your exercising if your hip muscles are aching, but don’t let it stop you from doing them altogether. Exercises will help you heal faster and increase your mobility.

For the first three months of your recovery, try to sit in armed chairs. Don’t sit on low stools or chairs. Your physical therapist will show you how to effectively get in and out of a chair by keeping your healing leg out in front of you. Physical therapists recommend that you get up and move around frequently, at least once an hour. When you’re climbing stairs, make sure that your unoperated leg steps up, and then bring your operated leg to the same step. After that, bring your cane or crutches up. Go down the stairs by reversing the process.
