Hip Dislocation after Hip Replacement Surgery
Most hip replacement patients are very pleased with the outcome of their total hip replacement surgery and suffer few complications. Instead, they are now able to walk and carry on with their daily activities without suffering from painful or stiff hip joints once they’ve recovered from the surgery. However, some patients do experience complications following their surgery. One of the most common complications following hip replacement is a dislocated hip. A dislocated hip occurs after about 4 percent of first-time hip replacement surgeries, and about 15 percent of second, or revision, hip replacement surgeries.

A healthy hip joint has surrounding muscles, ligaments and bone structures that support and stabilize the hip joint. They work together to keep a healthy femoral head, or ball, and the acetabulum, or the socket, from becoming dislocated. When a patient has total hip replacement surgery, the hip is no longer as stable. The support structures around the joint have been compromised and the prosthetic hip joint system is more likely to pop out of joint, or dislocated. When a patient has hip replacement surgery, he or she are advised to avoid activities during recovery that may cause a hip dislocation. They are often told not to cross their legs, not to bend their legs more than 90 degrees, not to sit on low chairs or couches and do not sleep on their side.

After recovery, many surgeons will allow their patients to resume some of these activities, but patients need to be cautious and understand that a hip dislocation may occur.
Some patients are more prone to hip dislocation, depending on how successful their surgery was or if they suffer from certain medical conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease or developmental hip dysplasia. Still, hip dislocations can occur even if there is no primary reason. Most hip joints are able to be popped back into place. A patient will need an x-ray to make sure the hip is repositioned correctly and to search for any potential reason why the dislocation occurred. A surgeon often performed a reduction, or repositioning of the hip joint, in an operating room or emergency room while the patient is under light sedation or general anesthesia.

If a patient has had multiple dislocations, surgery may be required. Patients should discuss with their orthopedic surgeon the reason for the dislocation, and what treatments or therapy may be necessary to prevent it from happening again.
