Revision Surgery Following a Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement
If you are experiencing an adverse reaction following your metal-on-metal hip replacement surgery, it is important to make an appointment with your orthopedic surgeon to discuss the symptoms you’ve been experiencing. Your surgeon will want to perform an exam and further evaluate the functionality of your metal hip implant. While the FDA doesn’t know at this point how often adverse reactions occur in patients with metal implants, there are certain patients who appear to have an increased risk of developing problems related to their metal implants.

They may include:

•    Patients with artificial hip joints on each side, or bilateral implants
•    Patients who underwent hip resurfacing and have metal implants with smaller femoral heads
•    Patients who are female
•    Patients who are receiving high doses of corticosteroids, including prednisone
•    Patients who have had kidney problems
•    Patients with suppressed immune systems
•    Patients whose hip implants weren’t aligned properly
•    Patients who have sensitivities to metal, including cobalt, chromium and nickel
•    Patients who are severely obese
•    Patients who are extremely physically active

If you aren’t experiencing any adverse reactions to your metal-on-metal hip implant, your surgeon will likely want you to continue to make follow-up appointments every one or two years. If you have been experiencing serious adverse reactions to your metal implant, your surgeon may recommend that you undergo a revision, another hip replacement surgery where the implant is removed and replaced with another implant. Those adverse reactions may include infection, joint dislocation, or a loosening or breakage of the implant. If your body appears to be developing a local or systemic reaction to the metal from your implant, your surgeon also may consider a revision surgery.

As with any surgery, there are risks associated with revision surgery. Patients may suffer a reaction to anesthesia, or suffer bleeding, infections or blood clots due to the surgery. A revision surgery also can be more difficult for a surgeon to perform if you’ve experienced a local reaction to the metal-on-metal implant, which can affect your bone quality and soft tissue surrounding the joint. If you decide to undergo a revision, your metal-on-metal hip implant will be removed and replaced with another implant. Your surgeon may ask if it is OK if the defective implant can be returned to the original manufacturer to be analyzed. It will allow the manufacturer to study the implant and perhaps find a reason why it failed. This may yield results that can lead to improved implants for future hip patients. There is typically no cost to you for this analysis, and you won’t receive payment for your participation.
