Living with a Hip Implant
When you’re released from the hospital or a rehabilitation facility following total hip replacement surgery, your recovery isn’t over yet.
You will need to continue with physical therapy until you are able to function normally with your new hip implant. Rehabilitation after total hip replacement surgery typically takes at least six months. When you get home from the hospital, you will need to inspect the surgery site and keep track of how you’re feeling. If you notice any drainage coming from your wound or redness around the wound area, you’ll want to call your surgeon’s office. Your doctor also may advise you to take your temperature at least twice a day to make sure you don’t have a fever. If you have a fever over 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit, make sure you call your surgeon.

You will have to use crutches or a walker for weeks after the surgery until you’re able to comfortably and safely move around without falling. The length of time that you’ll need to use a walking aid following surgery varies from each patient. You’ll need to continue to exercise when you get home from the hospital, even though you are continuing with physical therapy. Taking a short walk each day will help speed up your recovery. If you’re feeling sore, use a cold pack on your hip and slow down on your physical exercise, but don’t stop completely. Slowly, you will be able to resume many of the same activities you enjoyed before your hip became painful and stiff before your surgery. Most doctors will allow you to return to driving your car after about six or eight weeks after surgery. After about 4 to 6 weeks, you’ll be able to resume your sex life after your hip replacement. Be sure to ask your physical therapist about positions that will be safe for your new artificial hip.

It’s important to maintain a healthy body weight and lose extra weight if you need to in order to take the stress off your new hip. The hip is structured in such a way that every extra pound you put on your body adds an extra three pounds of stress to your hip. Your hip implant will last longer if you’re able to manage your weight. If you need to have dental work within two years following your surgery, your surgeon will likely advise you to take antibiotics before the dental procedure to prevent an infection from moving to your new hip joint.  Your doctor will recommend that you stay active after you’ve recovered from your surgery, but some high impact activities, like tennis or jogging, aren’t advised.
