What Kind of Medical Attention Should I Seek if I Think I Might Need a Hip Replacement?

Before you sign up for a hip replacement, you’ll want to look into all your options. Then you’ll know you took every possible measure to try to solve the problem before resorting to surgery. While hip replacement surgery is common and usually well tolerated, it comes with risks, as does any major surgery.

See Your Primary Physician
Does your doctor recommends over the counter analgesics (like NSAIDs), or will he or she prescribe a stronger pain reliever? What does your doctor think of steroid injections? Taking supplements? Weight loss efforts?

Go to a Physical Therapist
Ask about stretches and exercises that will strengthen muscles around your hip joint, thereby relieving pressure from the joint. This may enable the tissue to heal or properly regenerate.

Look Into Lifestyle Changes
Replace high impact exercises (like running, jogging, high impact aerobics) with low impact exercises (like water aerobics, swimming, biking or yoga.) Check to see if your shoes (especially heels) or office chair (it might be too high or low) is aggravating your hip joint. Look into using a body pillow for sleep support and stretching exercises that might relieve pressure on your joint.

See a Surgeon
You may need to go to an orthopedic surgeon to discuss a resurfacing procedure (where the surgeon shaves or cuts the bone to fit better in the socket) or an arthoscopy, which involves the trimming of excess cartilage. It’s possible that one of these procedures will remedy the problem so you won’t need a hip implant.

If these procedures won’t do the trick, you’ll want to discuss the different types of hip replacement surgeries. While metal-on-metal hip replacement implants are popular (they are sturdy and last long), some patients have concerns about metal ion levels or have sensitivities to metal. You will want to get evaluated by your primary physician for general health concerns that may affect your ability to tolerate surgery (heart health, lung health, blood pressure, etc.)

You’ll also want to discuss what type of implant will be best for you. You can ask about the difference between metal-on-metal hip replacement implants and ceramic or polyethylene prosthesis. Some implants are made from combinations of materials and may be more easily tolerated. All hip replacement surgeries come with risks, especially since this is a major surgery, but some implants may be better or worse for you, depending on your current medical conditions. Ask your doctor about possible side effects so you can evaluate your options.
