Younger, Active Patients and Ceramic Hip Implants
Many hip replacement procedures are accomplished using metal hip implants. While these types of hip implants can be effective for many patients, some orthopedic surgeons have been searching for hip implants that work well for younger, more active patients.
Metal hip implants can last about 20 years, and for most patients this is an acceptable life span of an artificial joint. But younger hip replacement patients, or those who are in their 30s or 40s, need an artificial hip joint with a longer life span. Some surgeons are finding that ceramic hip implants work well for younger patients, providing longer wear and a greater durability than traditional metal implants.

But like all artificial hip implants, they come with their own benefits and risks. Ceramic hip implants are durable and don’t release microscopic metal particles into the body, which can occur over time with metal hip implants. But ceramic hip implants are more costly and have a higher possibility of fracturing when compared to metal implants, although a fracture is rare. In about one to two percent of ceramic hip patients, the ceramic hip joints have reportedly caused squeaking or clicking noises.Ceramic hip implants are often used with women of childbearing age and patients who have metal sensitivities. While the ceramic materials used in the joints are durable and extremely tough, they are prone to becoming brittle, which can lead to fractures.

Ceramic hip patients who have had to have revision surgeries, or a second surgery to replace the existing hip implant with a new one, often needed the second surgery because of a fracture or to stop the noise. There are other options for younger patients. Some relatively new materials available for hip patients include a metal head combined with a ceramic surface, providing both the benefits of metal and ceramic. The ceramic-on-metal implants are costly, but can be a good fit for younger patients or those with metal allergies.
Since there are many types of hip implants made of different materials and designs, it’s important to discuss with your orthopedic surgeon what the best implant may be. Some patients may have had previous surgeries or fractures, and they may be better candidates for some implants, and not others.

There are many reasons why patients may or may not be suitable for certain hip implants. Your orthopedic surgeon can carefully go over the pros and cons of each type of implant to find the one that would work best for you.
