What to Watch For After Your Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement Surgery

After you’ve had a metal-on-metal hip replacement surgery, you will want to keep an eye out for indications that you are having complications of any type. While all hip replacement implants come with the risk of dislocation and malfunction, metal-on-metal hip implants present a few unique possibilities. In particular, you will need to watch for signs that your body is not tolerating the presence of metal inside your body.

Understanding Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement Implants
Now that you have a metal ball and socket inside your body, those two pieces of metal are sliding up against each other as you move around. Your surgeon will have placed the implant in your body such that this friction will be minimal, but it’s inevitable that, over time, tiny bits of metal will wear off the device. Normal wear and tear can cause corrosion as well. All of this can cause particles of metal to enter your bloodstream.

Understanding How the Presence of Metal in Your Body Might Affect You
Many people have metal inside their bodies. Perhaps you’ve had a screw or rod placed inside your body to secure a healing broken bone, or perhaps you have a heart implant of some sort. It’s not that unusual to have some sort of metal device or implant these days, especially not if you are older and have undergone medical procedures of significance.

Tissue Damage
In some cases the metal ions will cause your body to respond adversely to the presence of metal particles. Your soft tissue may be aggravated, causing swelling or pain. In some cases, the tissue is damaged or shows a more serious reaction to the metal, causing the hip implant to malfunction or impairing complete function of the new hip joint. In some cases the tissue damage progresses, causing tissue and bone deterioration or causing the implant to loosen or become dislodged.

Other Medical Side Effects
You’ll also want to watch for renal malfunction, heart problems, depression and other signs of audio or visual impairment. If you suspect something has changed since your surgery, you will want to check with your doctor to make sure it isn’t related to a possible increase of metal ions in your body.

The doctor may do a test such as joint aspiration, the imaging of your soft tissue or a blood test to check metal ion levels and to see exactly what is going on. The presence of metal ions does not cause problems for everyone, but you will want to seek help if the metal from your implant is causing difficulties. You may end up needing a revision surgery or another implant, but you may find there are simple solutions that are far less invasive. Talk to your doctor to find out what your options are.
