Do You Know the New Hip Implant Guidelines?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released new guidelines concerning metal-on-metal hip implants. These latest guidelines were released in January 2013, so if you are in the process of considering a hip implant and determining with your doctor the type of implant that is best for you, you will want to consider these guidelines carefully. You should also take note if you are already a patient with a metal implant because follow-up examinations of your implant may be necessary.
In addition to the general risks associated with all hip implants, these guidelines focus specifically on the problems caused by metal-on-metal implants. The FDA encourages surgeons to select this type of implant only in rare cases when the benefits of this type of implant outweigh any other type of implant. Essentially, if there is another option for patients aside from a metal-on-metal implant, the FDA encourages patients and doctors to choose it.
What is the Problem?
Evidence is growing that metal-on-metal implants cause soft tissue damage from metallosis. This condition occurs when the metal implant corrodes and releases metal ions into the bloodstream that travel throughout the body. Patients have also experienced a number of negative reactions including numbness, swelling, pain, and a loss of mobility.
The FDA is also encouraging those who already have metal implants to undergo testing for elevated levels of metal ions. If problems are seen as a result of the testing, it might be necessary for patients to undergo a second replacement operation. Even patients who have shown no signs of problems should undergo routine exams and testing every year or two. This prevents significant buildup and reaction, should the implant begin to wear and release metal into the system.
Am I at Risk?
You are if you have a metal-on-metal implant. In addition to concern for anyone with a metal implant, there are specific types of patients at greater risk. These include patients with two implants, patients who have resurfacing systems with small femoral heads, female patients, patients suffering from kidney problems, patients receiving corticosteroids, and patients with suppressed immune systems.
Many of the metal-on-metal devices on the market have already been recalled. If this is the case, you may be entitled to financial assistance with your follow-up medical procedures. It is important to speak with your doctor as soon as possible about your hip implant. Even if you are experiencing no health problems related to your implant, you need to know if you are at risk and if there are any future concerns.
