Hip Implant FAQs

If your doctor has suggested a hip implant, there’s a good chance you have plenty of questions. In addition to the consultation you will have with your primary doctor and the surgeon, you can also conduct your own research online. This information can help put your mind at ease before your surgery, determine if surgery is the best option for your case, and bring information to your doctor to discuss in detail.

Can My Hip Implant Break?

Though hip implants strengthen a weakened joint, it is possible for the implant to break. Sometimes what occurs is not a break, but a dislocation. The implant slips out of place and your doctor needs to reset it. This can be painful, but it is usually not serious. Dislocation can be avoided by moving your body carefully after surgery and avoiding activities and positions that can cause the implant joint to pop out of place.

It is also possible for implants to actually break. This occurs most often in older implants and requires revision surgery. This is a serious process and it can leave a patient less mobile than he or she was with the initial implant.

Can My Hip Implant become Loose?

In addition to breaking, older implants can also become loose. This is usually due to the tissue surrounding the implant. As the implant breaks down, the tiny fragments that break off irritate the bone and tissue, weakening the area and causing the implant to loosen. A loose implant can be painful and requires revision surgery.

Will My Hip Implant Set Off Metal Detectors?

It can. Metal detectors in airports are very sensitive and there are cases in which implants have triggered the sensor. Many doctors provide patients with identification cards alerting security to the presence of an implant.

Will My Legs be Two Different Lengths after Hip Implant Surgery?

They may be. Though surgeons do everything possible to prevent this from happening, once surgery begins, adjustments may be needed that result in uneven legs. Technological developments are making this less common, so if you are concerned, speak with your surgeon before the procedure to determine what he or she does to protect against this.

Will My Hip Implant Last Forever?

No. If you live long enough after your implant has been placed, you will eventually need to undergo surgery a second time. Hip implant devices are designed to last approximately 20 years, but some begin to malfunction long before that. There are also instances of implants lasting longer than 20 years. Speak with your doctor about the best time to insert your implant to reduce the risk of needing a second surgery.
