What to Expect After Your Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement Surgery

If you’re preparing to undergo a metal-on-metal hip replacement surgery soon, you’ll want to learn about what to expect after the procedure. The following facts will help you prepare.

Hospital Time
Most people are in the hospital for two to four days, but some end up hospitalized or in a rehabilitation center for up to a week.

You will be prescribed a blood thinner and pain medication, both of which you will need to take after your surgery. You may also be prescribed antibiotics if your doctor is concerned about infection.

Wound Care
You will probably have a combination of stitches, staples and clips to deal with, all of which will be removed by a doctor about a week or two after the surgery. If you also find you have a suture (which will be thick and clear), you can ask the nurse to trim it before you go home so it doesn’t irritate your skin.

At first you will need to dress your wound (or have a nurse or helper do this for you.) Leave the bandage on the wound until the wound stops oozing fluid. You will also have tape strips, which you must leave alone for at least a couple weeks, or until they begin coming off on their own.

You cannot shower until the drainage tubes have been removed. Once they have been removed, you can take a shower, but you will be asked not to take a bath until your wound is healed up and the doctor has approved a bath.

Possible Reactions
You will need to watch carefully for reactions to your metal-on-metal hip replacement implant. Keep an eye out for:
•    Skin rashes
•    Signs of thyroid problems
•    Signs of renal failure or decreased function

These negative side effects are sometimes attributed to the metal ions now inside your body. If you suspect you have a sensitivity to metals, you should talk to your doctor about the possibility of getting a ceramic implant instead of a metal-on-metal implant.

When You Get Home
You’ll want to have your home set up so you won’t have to go far to get the things you need. Put all necessary items on low shelves or easy to reach surfaces. It’s a good idea to put the phone, remote control, pill case, pitcher of water, etc. on a side table you can access from a comfortable couch or recliner. Make sure you can get out of the bed, recliner or couch easily or that you have help.

Home Health Care
Most people need home health care for a couple weeks after a hip replacement. Talk to your family and insurance about options.

Recovery Time
Most people recover in four to six weeks. You will need to use a walker for the first four weeks and probably will not be able to return to work for four to six weeks, depending on the type of work you do. Most people need to wait four weeks or longer to begin driving. You will not be able to play golf or walk long distances until about three months have passed. However, short walks are encouraged as are possible.
