Am I a Candidate for Hip Resurfacing Surgery?
Hip resurfacing often is considered an alternative procedure to the traditional hip replacement surgery, which is performed to relieve the pain of severe arthritis within the hip joint. Hip resurfacing gained popularity in the 1970s, and then fell out of favor with orthopedic surgeons. However, it has been used more frequently in recent years because of new technology used to perform the surgery and changes in hip implant designs. Hip resurfacing is often recommended for younger patients who might have to have to have several hip surgeries during their lives. Even though a hip patient may need hip replacement in the future, a hip resurfacing procedure may be able to prologue the time before the surgery is required.

Hip resurfacing gained in popularity in the 1970s, but then was replaced with more traditional hip replacement surgeries. The prosthetics used at the time for hip resurfacing were problematic, and would fail several years after the procedures. These patients often needed an additional surgery to address the implant failure. Since the 1990s, hip resurfacing implants become better designed and have shown to be more successful than the previous implants used for the procedure.

Hip resurfacing involves the placement of a metal cap over the femoral head, while a metal cup is implanted inside the pelvis socket. This ball-and-socket system replaces the patient’s hip joint yet removes less bone when compared to total hip replacement surgery.
The benefits of having hip resurfacing surgery includes less bone removal, which will provide an orthopedic surgeon with more original bone to perform any future revision hip replacement surgeries. The patient is less likely to suffer a dislocated hip because of the new, much larger femoral head. Because femoral neck is retained during hip resurfacing, the chance of suffering from a discrepancy in leg length is minimized, as is the possibility that a patient could experience a toe-in or toe-out discrepancy.

A patient might not be a suitable candidate for hip resurfacing if he or she suffers from rheumatoid arthritis or are tall and thin or small bones. Patients who have a poor blood supply or suffer from femoral head cysts may not be good candidates. Either are women of child-bearing age, because of the unknown risk of metal ion release from the implants on an unborn fetus.   The idea candidate for hip resurfacing is a patient 60 years or younger who has strong bone that surrounds the arthritic hip joint. Since the procedure allows the surgeon to preserve more bone, it can prevent potential complications down the road if the patient requires a revision.
