Reducing Your Pain Following Hip Replacement Surgery
One of the greatest concerns of those who undergo total hip replacement surgery is how to live with the pain following the surgery. While hip patients have lived with chronic hip pain for some time, often many years, the post-operative pain is unknown. Some patients may be more worried about the pain they will experience during their recovery than the actual surgery itself. There isn’t much a person with a severely arthritic hip can do before surgery to lessen the pain they will experience during recovery. The damage to the hip joint is irreversible, and some pain medications may do little to reduce the chronic pain.

Exercise and losing weight before your surgery can help during your recovery. Losing weight can help take some of the pressure off your recovering hip, while adding some tone and strength into the muscles that support the joint can be beneficial, too. But if your arthritic hip is too painful to exercise, don’t force your painful joint to work through the pain. If it causes you to take painkillers before surgery, this can affect the effectiveness of your pain medications used after surgery. While weighing less and having stronger muscle support around the joint can aid in your recovery, it may also reduce some pain during your recovery, too, although it may be minimal.

During surgery, your surgeon will attempt to minimize your post-operative pain by being gentle with the tissues surrounding your joint. This will minimize pain and swelling, and reduce the chances that you’ll experience painful adhesions. Don’t be in a rush to get off your pain medications following your surgery. The medications are critical at this point in order to help make you comfortable and heal. Take the medications in correct dosages as prescribed, especially before you start to feel pain. After a few weeks you can start adjusting the dosages and the timing of your medications. At this point in your recovery, you need the pain medications. Try not to be concerned about becoming an addict because you’re taking pain medications for a few weeks. As you start to feel better and in less pain, you’ll then require less medication. Keep in mind that most hip patients take pain medications as prescribed for about six to eight weeks, and sometimes longer, depending on their situation. While exercise and physical therapy are important during your recovery, try not to overdo it. Exercise can simply be performing some daily routines and walking. Walking is one of the best therapies for hip replacement surgery that there is, but make sure you listen to your hip and when you’re feeling pain, it may be time to rest.
