Frequently Asked Questions:

What's the problem with metal on metal devices?

Metal-on-metal implants are pretty common, but medical industry professionals won’t shy away from the fact that they can also cause some serious damage to the body. Metal-on-metal implants are hard and unlikely to break (a problem often faced by ceramic implants) but they do face significant problems as they experience wear and tear within the body. People are tough on their joints, putting them through a lot of wear and tear before the joint is allowed to rest. When that joint is replaced by a metal ball and socket, that wear and tear gets processed very differently, and the breakdown of a metallic implant can have some pretty serious health consequences.

The grinding process that happens in any joint causes metal particles to move throughout the system. The metal toxicity alone can be damaging to your health, potentially causing headaches, dizziness, infections, nervous system problems, confusion, and emotional problems. The breakdown of a metal implant can have other impacts on the body as well, requiring a second hip replacement, a hip replacement revision surgery, or other correctional surgery. It can also cause bone deterioration in surrounding joints. Cobalt poisoning, which can result from the breakdown caused by a metal-on-metal implant, can cause blood thickening, thyroid problems, nerve problems, and cardiomyopathy. These more serious and potentially fatal complications are far more rare.
