Hip replacements are a semi-permanent solution for those suffering from hip arthritis. Though they can help you regain mobility and live a full physical life, there are risks involved and the replacement joint does not last forever. In addition to the device wearing out, it can also loosen over time and make it impossible for the replacement to function as it should.

Joint replacements are fit snugly into the body during the surgical process. The snug fit ensures stability and security, so the replacement part does not move any more than it should. As it loosens, it can move slight amounts causing pain and limiting motion for the patient.

How Loosening of the Joint Replacement Can Harm You

The average hip replacement lasts about 20 years before there are any issues, though some people experience problems immediately or within just a few years of surgery. Loosening is a major concern because the surgery required to fix the problem is far more difficult than the initial placement of the device. Hip replacement revision surgery has a lower success rate and patients often lose a great deal of mobility after the revision. The life of the device is also shortened by revision, so there is a greater likelihood the device will need a complete replacement in the patient’s lifetime.

What Causes Loosening?

Joint replacement devices are safer and sturdier than they used to be, but there are still issues with loosening. The most common cause of loosening is osteolysis. As the device begins to weaken, tiny fragments wear off and weaken the body’s natural bone. Many describe osteolysis as a melting of the bone surrounding the implant. X-rays show holes on the bones in the area of the implant and these holes eventually weaken the support system for the device.

Osteolysis occurs because of the irritation caused to the tissue in the area around the implant. Over time, this wears out the bone and creates holes. No cure exists for osteolysis, but researchers are constantly on the look-out for new materials that perform better when used in joint replacement devices. The longer the life of the joint device the less likely osteolysis is to occur. Since it is the breakdown of the device that leads to the irritation of the tissue, patients will want to choose the longest lasting replacement possible. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees. Different patients have different needs and you will need to speak with your doctor about which type of replacement device is best for you.
