Frequently Asked Questions:

Are women impacted differently than men?

Hip resurfacing surgeries have been used as an alternative to hip replacements for years. In a hip resurfacing surgery (like in a hip replacement) the socket is completely removed and replaced with a metal piece. Unlike a hip replacement, the femoral head is not replaced with a metal ball, but the outer portion of the femoral head is ground off and then topped with a metal cap. This technique removes far less bone than the traditional hip replacement surgery, and became popular for hip replacement candidates under 55, who are more active and can get more years out of their hips.

Hip resurfacing surgeries, like hip replacement surgeries, are relatively common in the US and UK, but new studies show that it may be time to stop performing hip resurfacing surgeries on women. The medical industry is quickly moving away from metal-on-metal hip replacements because there’s about a 5% chance that patients will need a revision within just a few years. Research in England that surveys the data in Bristol, Exeter, and Derby is beginning to show that hip resurfacing surgeries have even higher failure rates in women than metal hip replacements do.  The data showed that hip replacement surgeries failed and required revision surgery within seven years in 8.5-11% of cases.

In men, the failure rates for hip resurfacing surgeries are no different than the failure and revision rates for other hip surgeries, but these failure rates are so high that doctors and experts in the UK are recommending that the surgery is no longer performed on women at all. Their research also revealed that failure and revision rates greatly depend on the size of the femoral head. The smaller the femoral head in the female patient, the more likely their hip resurfacing surgery would require revision.

If this strategy takes place in the US as well as the UK, thousands of hip resurfacing candidates will be forced to find another option. In this case, that means thousands of women are likely to choose hip replacement surgeries instead of hip resurfacing surgeries. The most important lesson that this data can teach women and their doctors is that candidate selection and a careful review of your medical history before choosing a surgical approach is extremely important. Not every surgical approach will work for every patient, and it’s okay to rule out a common approach if that’s not the best way to deal with your hip pain.
