Frequently Asked Questions:

Do seniors have additional risks when undergoing hip implants?

For some seniors across the globe, hip replacement surgery is the only way to deal with severe hip pain and limited mobility. While it’s a powerful tool in the fight against hip deterioration, there can be some devastating side effects.

The University of Southampton conducted a study of international patients who had undergone a total hip replacement to determine how the surgery affected the risk of stroke. Overall, the study showed that the two weeks immediately following a total hip replacement posed the highest risk for stroke in patients. The study covered 66,000 people who received total hip replacements, and showed that total hip replacements had a much greater chance of a stroke than patients of the same age and gender who did not receive a hip implant.

In the two weeks immediately following the surgery, the study showed that patients were five times more likely than non hip replacement patients to suffer from an ischemic stroke, and four times more likely to suffer from a hemorrhagic stroke. An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel into the brain is obstructed. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel becomes weak and bleeds into the brain. While the risk of stroke remained high for the year following the surgery, it dropped over time, leveling back to normal at the end of the year.

The study also found, however, that taking aspirin regularly before the hip replacement surgery greatly decreased the odds of an ischemic stroke. The odds dropped by 70% in the six weeks immediately following the surgery, suggesting that it might be a useful addition to any pre-surgery regimen. For years, doctors have advised patients to take aspirin daily in order to prevent cardiac problems. As gastrointestinal complications and ulcers became more common, however, the use of daily aspirin dropped off. Now, doctors are suggesting that the benefits to taking aspirin before a hip replacement outweigh the potential risks to your gastrointestinal tract. Aspirin doesn’t affect the odds of a hemorrhagic stroke, but because ischemic strokes can be life threatening, aspirin would be a great choice for this group.
