What are the Different Types of Hip Arthritis?

Though osteoarthritis is the most common cause of needing a hip replacement, there are instances in which other types of arthritis affect the joints of the body. All of them cause inflammation in the joints and over time damage the protective tissue. Sooner or later, arthritis becomes painful and for many people, downright unbearable.

This is known as wear-and-tear arthritis and is caused by a number of different factors. It most commonly affects older adults because the wearing away of the joint surface takes time. It causes pain and reduces motion in the hip joints. Hip replacement surgery may be needed, but patients also find that weight loss, supplements, and medication are effective treatments for osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

This type of arthritis affects people of all ages. It is a systemic, auto-immune disorder that causes the body to attack its own tissue. It usually affects the feet and hands, but it is also found in the neck, shoulders, and elbows. In addition to pain, there is usually swelling.

Lupus Arthritis

This is the type of arthritis that accompanies the disease lupus. It is an auto-immune condition that causes the body to attack its own joints. It typically occurs in the wrists, hands, and knees.

Infectious Arthritis

Joint inflammation can be caused by an infection. It can affect any joint in the body and may require surgery to remedy the infection.

Gout Arthritis

This type of arthritis is caused when urate crystals accumulate within a joint. These crystals form when a normal process in the body goes awry. Gout arthritis typically affects the knee or the big toe.

Pseudogout Arthritis
This is similar to gout arthritis, but it is caused by the accumulation of calcium deposits, as opposed to urate crystals. It typically occurs in the knee.

Arthritis may also occur when there is bleeding within a joint. This type of bleeding typically occurs in patients suffering from one of several specific diseases, including sickle cell disease or hemophilia. When blood accumulates in the joint, it causes swelling and inflammation.

Arthritis is often used as a general term to describe stiffness and pain in joints, but there are varying causes of the condition. It is important to speak with your doctor and determine the underlying cause before choosing a treatment plan. Typically, hip arthritis is caused by osteoarthritis, but you want to be sure there is not another cause that could render treatment ineffective. This is especially true if you have reached the point where a hip implant is needed and you will be undergoing a surgical procedure.
