What are the Risks of Hip Replacement Surgery?

Like all medical procedures, there are risks associated with hip replacement surgery. It is a common procedure, but it is still invasive surgery that is far from perfect. Before committing to a hip replacement, you should understand all of your risks. Complications include:

Infection is possible any time surgery or a medical procedure occurs. With hip replacements, infection is especially dangerous because it could necessitate the removal of the implant. Infection can develop just a short time after surgery or years after the placement of the implant. Additional surgery is often needed to cure an infection and several rounds of IV antibiotics may also necessary.

Blood Clots

Clots are fairly common after this type of surgery. The clotting condition associated with this type of procedure is called deep vein thrombosis. Most hip replacement surgery patients are given blood thinning medication for as much as a few months after the procedure. They are also instructed to wear compression stockings that reduce the risk of clotting.  It is also important to move as soon as possible after surgery. Physical therapy is intended to ease the risk of blood clotting, in addition to helping the patient learn to move with his new replacement.

This occurs if the ball becomes dislodged from the socket of the implant. It most commonly occurs when patients fall, but it is also a risk associated with Parkinson’s disease. Patients are given a list of precautions after their surgery that includes keeping legs uncrossed, sleeping with a pillow between the knees, keeping feet turned outward, and using elevated seating to prevent too much bending at the hip.

Loosening of the Implant

Though implants are intended to correct the issues caused by a damaged hip, they are not perfect. Implants usually need to be replaced after about 20 years. The more wear and tear on an implant, the looser it becomes, making it less effective and painful.

Many doctors recommend waiting as long as possible to have hip replacement surgery so only one procedure is needed in a patient’s lifetime. Unfortunately, the pain and immobility associated with hip arthritis is often debilitating and destroys a person’s quality of life. If you are younger than the average hip replacement candidate and you are concerned about your replacement lasting as long as possible, speak with your doctor about the type that will work best for you and what you can do to lengthen the life of your replacement device.
