What is Hip Arthritis?

Arthritis is a fairly common disorder. It can be mild, but that all depends on the part of the body it affects. If the pain and stiffness occur in a part of the body that is affected every time you move, it can be debilitating. This is the case with arthritis in the hip. When this area of the body is in pain, it is impossible to sit, lay, stand, or walk comfortably.

The most common type of arthritis to affect the hip is osteoarthritis. This is the type that occurs over time. It is sometimes referred to as “wear and tear” arthritis and is caused by the degeneration of the cartilage of the hip joints. As the cartilage wears away, bare bone is exposed. Without protection, a person is left with painful bone-on-bone rubbing every time she moves.

Osteoarthritis in the hip is a common problem for people over the age of 50. Since the problem is caused by the wearing away of cartilage, it makes sense that the longer a joint is at work, the more wear it experiences. This type of arthritis occurs more frequently for people who are overweight. Weight loss can ease the problem, but many years of living with excess weight causes damage to occur faster than it should.

Some people also develop arthritis in the hip because of previous injuries or fractures. If you suffer an injury, even earlier in life, you are at a greater risk for developing arthritis later. If you fall into this category, make sure you pay attention to your other risk factors and do what you can to keep your bones healthy.

How Do You Know You are Developing Hip Arthritis?

This is a progressive disease, so early symptoms could be hard to recognize. You might feel a little stiffer than usual or experience some mild pain that does not affect you all that much. The pain may come and go, too. Some people report flare-ups that are affected by the weather and humidity. This makes it difficult to give a precise diagnosis during the earliest stages of the disease. Patients who suspect they may have arthritis in their hip should be aware of pain in the area, limited range of motion, stiffness, and the inability to walk without a limp. A doctor’s exam will include x-rays and a physical to further assess the problem.

Treating Hip Arthritis

Hip arthritis can be managed, but it takes some effort. The ability to manage it successfully also depends on the progression of degeneration. People who are overweight will want to do whatever is possible to reach a healthy weight. Exercise can help with weight loss and ease the stiffness and pain of arthritis. Physical therapy, medications, supplements, and surgery can also be effective treatments for hip arthritis.
