FAQ
Causes for Total Hip Replacement Surgery
There are many reasons why doctors may recommend that a patient undergo total hip replacement surgery. The underlying cause for most patients is painful arthritis.
Arthritis affects more than 40 million Americans. The most common forms of arthritis include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid and traumatic arthritis.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis causes painful and stiff joints when the cartilage located at the end of the bone starts wearing away, causing the bones to rub against one another. Osteoarthritis is one of the most common reasons why patients over 50 need to undergo total hip replacement surgery.
Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis causes inflammation, which damages the cartilage in a patient’s joints. It is an autoimmune disease.
Traumatic arthritis
Traumatic arthritis can occur when a patient suffers a serious hip injury or breaks a hip bone, causing damage at the joint.
Other hip-related diseases and conditions
There are other reasons why a patient may need total hip replacement surgery. Avascular necrosis is a condition in which the ball head of the femur bone loses blood and then dies. There are a few reasons why avascular necrosis develops. It can be caused by a disease, including sickle cell disease, Gaucher disease, gout, diabetes or long-term steroid use. It also can be caused by severe trauma to the bone, like a fracture or dislocation, which causes a loss in blood supply to that area of the bone.
Idiopathic osteonecrosis is a condition in which there is no known cause for the femur to have lost some of its blood supply, causing the bone to die. Hip fractures and other hip conditions, including those that appear during childhood, can cause hip joints to degenerate years after an injury and require surgery. Childhood hip conditions can include developmental dysplasia, congenital hip dislocation and Perthes disease.
While not everyone who suffers from a hip condition will need to undergo a total hip replacement surgery, the pain and stiffness due to painful hip joints can diminish a person’s quality of life. It is up to patients to determine the point at which they’ve tried all non-invasive treatments and feel that surgery is the best medical solution. Many patients will endure daily chronic pain for years before they speak to a doctor about surgical options out of fear of the surgical procedure.
If you suffer occasional twinges of pain because of excessive physical activity, such as running, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll need a hip replacement. But if you have difficulty taking a shower, walking or getting dressed or even sleeping due to hip pain, then your quality of life has been affected and you may be a candidate for hip replacement surgery.
