Does Hip Pain Lead to Hip Replacement Surgery?
Hip pain is a problem experienced by many people of all ages, and it can be attributed to many causes. To receive an accurate diagnosis for your chronic hip pain, it’s important to discuss your symptoms with your doctor so that the underlying problem can be diagnosed.
Here are some common reasons for hip pain:
•    Arthritis is often the cause for hip pain. Various treatments to decrease the pain and swelling of the joints are available. As a last resort, an orthopedic surgeon will recommend hip replacement surgery, which involves replacing your arthritic hip with an artificial hip joint.
•    Trochanteric bursitis occurs when the bursa, found outside the hip, becomes inflamed.
•    Tendonitis affects the tendons that are found surrounding the hip joint.
•    Osteonecrosis occurs when the blood flow to an area of the hip joint, most likely the femoral head, is restricted, causing the bone to die. The bone then becomes brittle, fractures and can collapse.
•    Lower back pain can often refer pain to the hip joint area. It may include a painful sciatica or herniated discs.
•    Snapping hip syndrome is a condition in which bands that surround the hip and thigh bone snap, which can cause tears in the cartilage.
•    Muscle strains in the hip and pelvic area can cause hip pain and spasms. They can include hamstring strains and groin pulls.
•    Hip fractures can occur in elderly patients who suffer from osteoporosis, or brittle bones. Surgeons treat the hip fractures with a surgical procedure to repair or replace the broken bone with a metal stabilizing plate and screws.
•    Stress fractures of the hip are common in athletes, especially those who participate in high-impact sports.
•    Developmental dysplasia occurs because the hip joint didn’t develop properly in utero, causing the hip joint to become dislocated when the patient is an infant. It can lead to an early case of arthritis or problems with walking.
•    Perthes Disease is similar to osteonecrosis, but the condition occurs during childhood, often leading to permanent hip joint damage and later, arthritis.
If your hip pain seems to be lingering and is becoming increasingly painful, you should make an appointment with your doctor to find the root cause of the pain and the appropriate treatment plan. If the hip pain is making it difficult for you to walk or bend your hip, or your hip feels hot or is red, a possible sign of infection, you should see a doctor.
