When Young Patients Need Hip Replacement Surgery
Hip replacement surgery is often thought of as a surgical procedure performed on elderly patients who are suffering an arthritic hip. While the surgery is most often performed on older patients, it is becoming increasingly common for younger, active patients who have severely arthritic hips to have the surgery, too. Many people in their 40s and 50s, or even younger, are undergoing the surgery to receive a prosthetic hip. One of the main concerns why surgeons often want to wait to perform hip replacement on younger patients is out of a concern that the hip implant may need to be replaced. This is also why patients who undergo hip replacement surgery need to be cautious and follow their surgeons’ recommendations on activity restrictions so they can extend the life of their implant.

A younger patient who is considering hip replacement surgery will need to discuss with his or her doctor whether the benefits of the surgery outweigh the risks. If the patient is becoming increasingly sedentary due to chronic hip pain, it is greatly affecting his or her quality of life. Surgery would then provide quality of life benefits and would reduce pain and allow the patient to remain physically active, which may help reduce the risks of developing other health conditions due to inactivity, such as cardiovascular disease.

Studies have found that artificial hip joints do wear out more quickly in younger, rather than older patients, mainly because of their increased activity levels. But newer implants are showing better results for longevity in lab tests, so this may be encouraging news for younger hip patients. However, studies have found that in patients under 50, the implants are still functioning well in nearly 90 percent of patients after 10 years. After 15 years, about 60 percent of patients continue to have functioning hip implants.

Generally, most hip replacements have been found to last more than 20 years. One study found that 80 percent of younger hip patients, or those 65 years and younger, continued to have a well functioning implant after 15 years. The study found that older patients, or those over 65, had 94 percent who continued to have a well functioning implant. Some patients may need to undergo revision hip replacement, or a second hip replacement surgery. Revision surgeries aren’t often as successful as a first hip replacement, but they also aren’t as common. Only about 2 percent of hip patients require revision surgery within five years of their original hip replacement.
