If you are recovering from a metal-on-metal hip replacement surgery, you may be surprised at how limited your mobility is at this time. Don’t worry; you will regain mobility and will learn how to work with any limitations. Just start with these simple exercises and take these precautions into consideration.

Exercises for People Recovering From Hip Replacement Surgery
You will need to start with the gentle exercises your physical therapist teaches you in the hospital, such as ankle pumps and ankle rotations. Once you get home, you will want to graduate to exercises involving your knees and legs. You will need to strengthen your leg and buttock muscles so your new hp joint will be properly supported.

This will include contracting and releasing your buttocks, gently lifting your leg (slightly) while standing, and carefully lifting your knee towards your chest (but never bending it more than 90 degrees or bringing it above your waist. These careful exercises will move your muscles and help your joint get used to movement without jarring the new hip joint.

Precautions to Take if You’ve Had Hip Replacement Surgery
The biggest concern is that you will wrench the metal ball out of the metal socket, something that can definitely happen. While your metal-on-metal hip implant is sturdy, it is not indestructible, and it will dislocate more easily than a natural hip joint would.

This means you should take the following precautions:
•    Try to stand such that your knees remain somewhat apart
•    Don’t try crossing either your knees or crossing your legs because this can pop the ball out of the socket
•    Be careful not to bend in such a way that your knee comes above your waist or your hips bend more than 90 degrees.
•    Make sure all chairs allow a 90-degree angle for your upper and lower leg. Stay out of low sitting or deep-seated chairs where your knees will pop up above that 90-degree angle.
•    Sleep on your front or back, but never on your side.

These rules are most important for the first three months. After about 90 days have passed, your new hip will be more stable, and you will have more flexibility. Still, you will need to be aware of and especially careful when you are presented with any of these positions or angles. Artificial hips are not as stable or sturdy as natural hip joints.

Taking Care of Your New Hip Joint
The best thing you can do is to work up to walking. Start with walking around the house, and then work up to walking to the mailbox. Graduate to walking to the neighbor’s house or to making it through the grocery store. Eventually you will regain your strength and mobility.
